Every year the world remembers great music people who have passed on. Some die at a ripe old age, while others leave us way too soon. This year was no exception.
Here are some of the more prominent musicians who died in 2014. They left us – and left a legacy.
Joe Cocker – English rock and blues singer, known for his gritty voice, spasmodic body movement, and cover versions of popular songs.
Jack Bruce – Bass player and vocalist of the power blues trio Cream.
Phil Everly – Half of the American country-influenced Everly Brothers, with his brother Don, known for their tight harmonies.
Tommy Ramone – Music producer and co-founder of the seminal punk band the Ramones.
Pete Seeger – Banjo-picking troubadour and activist who introduced generations of Americans to folk music.
Johnny Winter – Texas blues icon who rose to fame in the late ’60s and ’70s, brother of Edgar Winter.
Bobby Womack – Highly influential R&B singer-songwriter whose career spanned more than 50 years, during which he played R&B, soul, rock and roll, doo-wop, gospel, and country.
Paul Revere – Founder of Paul Revere & the Raiders, an American rock band that saw considerable success in the late ’60s and early ’70s.
Ian McLagan – English keyboardist, best known as a member of the Small Faces and Faces. He also collaborated with the Rolling Stones and led his own band in the late 1970s.
Bobby Keys – Saxophone player who toured with and played on albums by The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Who, Harry Nilsson, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Joe Cocker.
Jerry Vale – Crooner known for his high-tenor voice and romantic songs in the 1950s and early 1960s.
Jimmy Ruffin – Soul singer with multiple hits; elder brother of David Ruffin of the Temptations.
